Atari 2600 - In 1977, Atari started the video game revolution with the Atari Video Computer System (VCS), or as it's called today, the Atari 2600. Far ahead of the current competition at the time, Atari replaced simple Pong-style graphics with non-detailed sprites and sound to match. The system also had the ability to go beyond its limitations by using newer software techniques and hardware aids within the actual cartridges.

A huge variety of games were produced for the 2600. Atari and a large group of third party companies such as Activision and Imagic continued to push the system to its limits in the early 80's. Many hardware accessories were also manufactured, such as rapid-fire joysticks, the Supercharger (my personal favorite), and many others.

Between 1982 and 1984, a tremendous flood of bad games saturated the market. This, and the debute of the ColecoVision, spelled doom for the Atari 2600. However, Atari did re-release the 2600 in the late 80's, and it survived mainly by mail-order until the early 90's! A few game companies and even some private individuals still produce games for this system today. No other system has lasted as long as the 2600.
