Hit and Run

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

No, I’m not talking about the old Simpson’s video game either, but rather a bit of life that finally hit me this week (pun intended). I don’t think I’ve ever had this happen before, but some less honest person hit the front hood of my car, leaving a rather nasty dent and scratches. No note, phone call, or anything. I found the damage this morning. Some people out there are just dishonest nuts.

There. I felt like getting that off my chest, so the whole world can know about it. Part of having a blog I guess. I’m sure there are enough folks out there that have this kind of thing happen, and I feel for you folks too.

Other than that, this has been a costly week for my car, but I’m still grateful for having one. I had to pay for lots of overdue maintenance and brake replacements. Only down side for now, I may have to put off getting some electronic stuff for next years MGC show. Just a fact. Priorities, priorities.

Summer 2009…

Monday, July 20th, 2009

It is almost halfway through Summer ’09, and honestly, time is flying by. I have to admit that I’ve done little for the UC ’09 display. I’ve been thinking a lot about it, but have not done much else. I’m debating on bringing the N64 this year. I also can’t decide on doing Quake again or not. I’d also like to get some extra hardware for the Apple II, but am holding back for the moment. This hardware would really help with the old IIgs and IIe, in replacing hard drives and floppies with an SD card!

Hope to get more in the swing of this soon (but probably later). I’ve got painting to do still, and school starts in just over a month!

On the side, my brother-in-law Greg bought a Wii recently!!! It sure helped with my buying a graduation gift for my niece Kayla. Actually, it’ll probably help with gifts now for the rest of the year (B-days and Xmas)! :)

NPD June 2009 – overall VG sales down

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Ack! I’m a tad late again in posting the NPD sales figures for video games. Oh well, on with the show.

Video game sales, consoles and games both, are down overall for the month of June, 2009. This is in comparison to sales figures from a year ago. This doesn’t mean that video games are going down, it just means that the economy is affecting sales, to some point. If you actually look at the numbers, sales are up from last month (mostly), so I don’t see this as a horrible thing. This also explains why you can find Wii systems much easier in stores now. Snap them up when you can, as I would expect sales to pick up eventually as the holiday season slowly approaches.

NPD figures for June 2009 are:
Hardware:

  • NDS = 766,500 units sold! (424,000 of which were DSi)
  • Wii = 361,700
  • 360 = 240,600
  • PS3 = 164,700
  • PSP = 163,500
  • PS2 = 152,700

Software (top games for June 2009):

  • Prototype – 360 = 419,900 units sold
  • UFC 2009 Undisputed – 360 = 338,300
  • EA Sports Active Bundle – Wii = 289,100
  • Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 – Wii = 272,400
  • Wii Fit – Wii = 271,600
  • Fight Night Round 4 – 360 = 260,800
  • Fight Night Round 4 – PS3 = 210,300
  • Mario Kart Wii – Wii = 202,100
  • Red Faction: Guerrilla – 360 = 199,400
  • Infamous – PS3 = 192,700

For hardware, the DS (and especially the DSi) are holding the top spot, along with the Wii. The 360 is closing the gap a bit though, and I don’t see any issues with that. Competition is good! As for the rest, just look at the chart, as it is pretty much the same order it has been for months, with the exception of the PS2 dropping down a notch.

In game sales, June was different than it has been in some time. Both the 360 and the Wii have four spots in the top ten, with the 360 winning out at the top of the chart. The PS3 only has two top ten games, both near the bottom. I was surprised a tad that the DS(i) has nothing in the top ten, considering the units are tops in hardware sales. One good thing though, is that Wii Play for the first time did not make the top ten! (I’ve never really liked Wii Play, and was so tired of it selling so well, just because people buy it for the controller mostly).
