8-player Quake LAN is ready to go!

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

I finally got that last tangerine colored iMac cleaned up as best I could and hooked it up to the LAN to test it (and the 25′ cable I bought). Everything worked just dandy, so I now have nine G3 iMacs ready for the show. Eight will be for players, and the other one will run the show. If things get really busy, as in people waiting to play, I may allow use of the ninth computer. I’m just trying to avoid the few folks who quit the program last year on the one machine that runs the LAN, which of course shut the LAN down. Always nice when you tell people not to quit a game, and they do it anyway.

On the side, I’ve named the tangerine iMac Amber, as I like each system to have a name. I may list them all here soon (just because I can).

With that done, I need to print up more Quake signs for this year, so people can easily fine my LAN area. I also want to create updated instructions for the game too, now that the ‘mouse options’ work on all machines. I need to switch over and finish TV testing too, and pick out a few more console systems. As mentioned, the G7400 is next on my list!

Later folks…

Tangerine iMac getting there…

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

Going to bed real soon. I got the tangerine colored iMac up and running, after some difficulty with the RAM that it came with (had to swap it out with spare RAM I had). Took out the hard drive, which is always a bit of fun, but easier than the newer G3 iMacs. Then copied over the entire drive from the Blue Raja iMac (lime colored iMac). Getting too tired to do anymore, so I’ll put it back together later today, and test it all out on the LAN. If all goes well, the Quake LAN will be complete, and ready to go for the show.

The older G3 iMacs may be slower and have poorer video cards, but they are easier to open and work with, in my opinion. Wish the newer (but still old) G3 iMacs were as easy. They can break too quickly, as I’ve already found out.

And, Happy Birthday to my niece Stephanie today! :)

Still working on last iMac

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

Yeah, I’m behind schedule again, but not a big deal. Managed to start working on the last of the G3 iMacs for the LAN, but have not finished with it yet. Hope to get it done later tonight/very early Sunday morning. Till then, that is all I have to report for today.

Getting closer… less than two weeks till the show!

Tangerine

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Plans don’t always go accordingly. Today is a good example of that. I wanted to get that last iMac up and running, but I’m a bit low on time today. I could still squeeze it in, but it isn’t looking good. I’m hoping to get more of this done over the weekend.

Other than that, I got my shopping done, more than I bargained for though. Was up to 4am doing it (yeah 4am). Time for a nap at this point (yeah, I take naps, deal with it). ;)

More soon to come…

Staying home in the rain…

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

What a wet dreary day, not that I don’t like rain, just not when I want to go out shopping in it. Oh well.

I’ve done a little UC work today, and hope to have the last iMac running later tonight/early Friday morning. I did manage to find my other Atari 7800 joystick too, in a place I didn’t expect to find it (found when looking for something else entirely).

As for more systems, very close to pulling out the Philips G7400. I don’t want to run it the whole time at the show, but will probably have it next to the Odyssey2, and swap between the two on the same TV set. That way I won’t be doing the 120 to 220 volt conversion all the time, which is a strain on the equipment.

For now though, some shopping, and a cram session at school (for a cert test). Weeeee!

Atari 7800 added to UC 2010 lineup

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

I took a bit of time away from other things and tested another TV set finally, but this time with the Atari 7800 system. Since I got the system out, I’ve decided to simply add it to the UC 2010 display. I love this old system, especially Alien Brigade and a few other games that play very well on the old 7800. This system also has a nice S-video display, thanks to it having been MOD’d three years ago from a fellow video game friend.

I still need to get one more iMac system working for the LAN, plus dig out more TV sets, and pick a few more systems to have on display. That will hopefully happen before this coming weekend is up, but I make no promises.

Less than three weeks to go!

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Two weeks and a few days to go, and I’m not ready yet, but will be. As for what I was going to do this very early morning, it is on hold, as school wins over UC at this time. Sorry.

Nice to see that the speaker list will be posted on the MGC site very soon, for those folks who’ve been asking me about that!

Early Monday…

Monday, March 8th, 2010

The weekend is finally over (work weekend that is). I need to do a good amount of studying for an important test tomorrow, so I do not know if I’ll be going any UC (MGC) work today. I’m hoping to get in a little later today, possibly with finally getting my TV sets checked out.

Time will tell… later today or very early on Tuesday…

Sunday, sunday…

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

Sunday again, and a work, sleep, work, sleep weekend too. Nothing done today, except what I just said. Sorry…

Moving stuff around

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

Not much time to work on things today. I spent about an hour in the basement, moving stuff around to make room to finally test TV sets (yeah, I haven’t done that yet). Don’t expect problems, but I’d rather be safe that sorry. So, I now have a space to plop down TVs, plus ‘em in, and test them out. Yeah!

I also made a slight change to the Strawberry iMac – I remembered to change it’s IP address – don’t want any network conflicts during the Quake LAN.

Back to studying…
