The Super A’Can (sold in Taiwan), and considered a 4th generation console, will be on display for the UC 2012 area (thanks to John Norman for loaning the system for the Underdog area). This true overseas underdog system will be running four games, C.U.G. (Journey to the Laugh), Sango Fighter, Son of Evil and Speedy Dragon.

This will be my first experience with the Super A’Can, since I personally have not sat down to play the system in the past. Will be an interesting experience, that I’m sure of, as I hope it will be for show goers as well.

For now, the 6th, 4th, and 2nd generation of consoles have entries in the UC 2012 exhibit. More are to come of course, with the most additions to the 2nd generation video game consoles. I plan on having at last one system from each generation, except the current and the 3rd generation (NES era).

For now, here is a shot of the Super A’Can console, courtesy of John Norman.

As I’ve kind of talked about it in prior posts, the UC area is changing a bit this year, in regards to some systems that will be on display for 2012 (and beyond). The first of these announcements is now official, with the fact that the Xbox is the 3rd system announced here for the 2012 UC exhibit. It may have been a popular gaming 6th Generation gaming console, but it will be running Steel Battalion: Line of Contact, which while being a rather good (and complicated) game, is considered an underdog game due to its limited sales and lack of online support.

Two Steel Battalion systems will be supplied by my brother-in-law Greg, who grew to like this system so much from the Modern Museum (Console Arcade) single-player setup. He liked it so much, he bought two Xbox systems last year, along with the two Steel Battalion games and controllers too (both styles of controllers). This setup has been officially tested as of today, which is why the game setup is being announced now. A 3rd Xbox system and Steel Battalion game will be supplied by our friend John Norman, who has been very encouraging in his help with getting this game into the UC area for this year (thank you John!). A 4th person, Sean – from the Classic Museum (E2M) area – will be loaning us the 4th Xbox setup (thank you Sean). This will all be combined via a network switch to create a Steel Battalion: LoC 4-player LAN setup.

So those few gamers who know how to play this game will want to give this setup a whirl. For those who don’t know it, give it a try anyway. Don’t let the 40-button controller and two joysticks scare you away. It is a bit hard to learn to play the game, but it is worth the effort to at least give it a try, and we’ll be there to help anyone who wants to try it. You don’t know what you missing if you don’t play the game!

Welcome Steel Battalion: Line of Contact to the UC 2012 exhibit! This is going to be an interesting year at the MGC show!

(Pictures to follow in a day or two – as this is new for the UC area)

I won’t go into too much detail, because this is not finalized in any way yet, but there is a chance that there will be a 6th Generation gaming console setup to do a 4-player LAN game. This of course would be a somewhat popular system, but with an underdog game (it sold, but not in large numbers, thus the underdog status).

It will be interesting to see how this pans out. It can possibly be done, but I know that I don’t have enough flat panel TV sets to do this in as small an area as possible. Thus while this is a possibility, it make take up a bit more space than I’d like. It would be nice if I could get two flat panel TVs from the two systems that will be borrowed, but I don’t think that is going to be an option.

Debating this for now, till I get in contact with another person who would be borrowing his system for the 4-player setup. I think this would be a very cool thing to do for 2012, but for now, it is only in the works – no guarantee at this point.

Was planning on doing testing for the more popular system with an underdog game to run alongside the Dreamcast, but that has been delayed till probably next week. Nothing severe, just life getting in the way, as it always does. Not that I’m complaining much. For now I think I’ll try to finish my TV inventory, which is a tad out of date from last year’s show. I may possibly try to pull out another system, but there is a good chance I’m going to relax instead. First day of college tomorrow, and I’d like to get in a little more R&R before the fun begins. Maybe a movie (I have a backlog of those), if my darn eye infection will let me see the TV clearly enough tonight (just the right eye, but it makes for a fuzzy picture – left clear, right fuzzy, brain going ‘what the heck’).

On a side note, a rare system I hinted at hopefully doing for 2012 will be done by the Classic Museum section of the show, by my friend Marty (the lucky guy). Just found out, so I won’t bother duplicating a know system from another area. There is always overlap, but I don’t need to overlap a rather rare system. Maybe some other year. I’ll have to think what to replace it with, but I’ve got enough stuff that I’m sure to come up with something (but it won’t be new – maybe bring back the Intellivision – it has been a while since I’ve displayed that system).

Game on fellow comrads…

Another day, another TV set and system pulled out of storage, and ready for the MGC 2012 show. This time my all time favorite console system, the Odyssey2. This system is from the early 2nd Generation of video games, which will be joined be a few others soon. I’ve always been such a big fan of the Odyssey2 and its cousins overseas (Videopac) and in Brazil too (as the Odyssey). The display board from prior years will be used for this system, but I do plan on updating it a bit (tiny bit at that).

As for games, I plan on concentrating to some extent on home-brews for the Odyssey2, plus some of the more popular Odyssey2 games too. I will be spotlighting two (and just possible three) new games from Revival-Studios, which have been created by Martijn over in the Netherlands. These two new games will be Astro Dodge and the more recent Mayhem title. I’ll have on hand other home-brews from various O2/VP programmers, and there won’t be a single dud in the bunch (they’re all good in simple terms).

I won’t list other games here, as honestly, I have them all – and they will be at the show. Again, expect lots of home-brews, some prototype releases from recent and past years, plus a few regular games thrown in to boot.

As mentioned in my prior post, no pictures for the O2, I’ve done enough in the past. I will take pictures at the show though.
Stay tuned, more to come.

Finally getting my gears going, I have managed to hook up a TV and game system for the UC 2012 exhibit. To start with I went to the top (or as far as I will go), and went with a 6th Generation system, that being the Sega Dreamcast. I didn’t expect much trouble with this system, as it is fairly new. The only issue is the console battery is dead, but as long as it works, I’m not going to worry about that for now. Just means I will have to enter the date whenever I start the system up on that weekend in March. Not a big problem. The Dreamcast will run alongside a popular 6 Generation system, which is still in testing, but will have a unique underdog style game running on it.

As for games, I’m not 100% sure what will run, but games I can currently pick from are: Atari Anniversary Edition, Bangai-O, Crazy Taxi, Demolition Race: No Exit, Chu Chu Rocket, Grandia II, House of the Dead 2, Ikaruga, Namco Museum, Sonic Adventure, and possibly a few more (but I doubt I’ll go through all of these). Game that I know will play for sure are in bold.

This system currently does not have a display board for it, and as stated before, I will try to get some done for 2012. I doubt that I will get these done for all the systems in my area. Time will tell, but it will be more than just the Odyssey2 and Mac with display boards this year.

That is it for today. No pictures as I’ve done in the past, as I took enough pictures of systems in the last few years to last for a while. Unless it is unique to this year, then I will post picture here (and there are at lest 2-3 possible systems that will be making a first appearance in the 2012 MGC show).

Stay tuned for more…

After a night of thinking about this, and a few e-mails from friends, I have come to a decision. That of the Underdog Chamber staying within the realm of the Underdog. Nothing popular, or at least nothing that was top-of-the-line. You may spot a few popular ‘systems’ in the UC area for 2012, but they will strictly be running underdog-style games (no Mario or anything near that – not that Mario is bad, it just isn’t underdog). I want the Underdog Chamber to be the home of the underdog, as my heart has always has a spot for systems like the old Odyssey2.

With that out of the way, progress in underway for the UC area for 2012. One setup is in testing (something new for 2012), and my inventory of TV sets is underway as well. Announcements for systems and games for UC 2012 will commence within weeks (hopefully).

In similar news, I got a great update, in that a special multi-cart for a rather old system may finally arrive before the show. I hope it does, as it will make one system even that much more fun to have at the show.

Later…

To be or not to be, that is what needs to be decided on doing some popular systems within the realm of the underdog systems for my UC exhibit for 2012. Seems some folks think I should keep my cool reputation as the home for the ‘underdog’ systems. While I don’t mind doing this, it does get a bit tiresome at times. There is the option of doing one or two popular systems, and doing underdog games for it (those games that didn’t sell well, but are great anyway). I did do this once in 2006 with the Genesis and few games, but it didn’t go too well. Need to debate this with myself, and see what I come up with.

If anyone out there in cyberland has opinions on this, feel free to share.
